Superman: X-Ray Vision
August 30, 2018Sin or Shalom
September 13, 2018“The Spirit of the Lord … has sent me to proclaim … recovery of sight for the blind …” Luke 4:18
I don’t want to wander around in the darkness anymore. I don’t want to trust my limited vision and my self-deluded heart. On my own, through the eyes of my natural, Self-infected heart, I can see at best through a dim mirror. But to see with Jesus’ eyes—with his Holy Spirit clarity—now that is true sight.
I want to see. I want to discern. I want to know the truth, the truth that sets me free. And I can’t get there with my human 20/20.
So I look to Jesus, and to the Holy Spirit’s energy, clarity, and creativity. Like blind Bartimaeus, I simply say, “Rabbi, I want to see.” (Mark 10:51)
And in turn Jesus says to me,
“Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.” (John 14:21, bold added)
What a promise! If you follow Jesus, if you seek him first, as your Lord, as your leader, and yes, even as your best friend, he promises you will be able to see him … with the eyes of your heart. As I have experienced this 20/20 spiritual vision, I seek to see with the eyes of His heart now. That is a beautiful thing.
After healing the man born blind, and then verbally scuffling with the Pharisees, who were blinded by their own self-seeking hearts, as I have been for so long, Jesus said this:
“I came into the world to bring everything into the clear light of day, making all the distinctions clear, so that those who have never seen will see, and those who have made a great pretense of seeing will be exposed as blind.” (John 9:39, The Message)
“Exposed as blind.” Have you been? I hope so. Really, I do hope so. It’s your only chance. If not, you will wander around this cultural desert, and end up following the wrong gods home. (Learn to be Still, The Eagles)
If I look through my own eyes, or the eyes of the culture, I’m lost. The blind leading the blind. But if Jesus enlightens the eyes of my heart, then I can soar like Superman with a super power vision immeasurably more than anything I could have asked for.
Therefore, each day,
“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give me the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that I may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of my heart may be enlightened, in order that I may know the hope to which he has called me, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.” (Ephesians 1:17-19, bold added)
